AKLAVIK

Picture

Aklavik was established as a small trading post. By the 1920s, it became the chief trapping, trading and transportation centre for the Mackenzie Delta. Unfortunately, due to its location and geology, the settlement was plagued with flooding and erosion problems. In the 1950s the federal government chose to relocate the town site to where Inuvik stands today, however, many Aklavik residents refused to leave, giving birth to their present day community motto: "Never Say Die".

Aklavik – Place of the Barren Land Grizzly Bear – is located on the Peel Channel of the Mackenzie Delta, approximately 100 kilometres south of the Beaufort Sea. It is known as the place where the Inuvialuit and the Gwich’in traditionally met and sometimes clashed.

The population of Aklavik is approximately 730. Ninety percent of the population is Inuvialuit or Gwich’in. Many residents still follow a traditional lifestyle of trapping, hunting and fishing.
