Gwich'in Land Use Planning Board
Land use planning protects the well being of the people and communities of the Gwich'in Settlement Area. The Gwich’in Land Use Planning Board (GLUPB) will develop a Land Use Plan for the Settlement Area and is responsible for checking the Plan on a regular basis and deciding if any changes need to be made.
The Land Use Plan will provide for the conservation, development and use of the land, water, or resources identified in the Plan (e.g. any development on the land within the Settlement Area). The Land Claim describes the principles that will guide the development of the Land Use Plan in Section 24.2.4.
The government must approve the Land Use Plan. Once approved, all bodies that give licences or permits for the use of land or water in the Settlement Area (e.g. the Land and Water Board) must follow the Land Use Plan.
